An Ode to the Avant-garde Lisbon
The Modernista is a rehabilitation and renovation project that preserves the 86-88 Castilho original architecture signed by Norte Júnior.
The apartments located in central Lisbon keep the original materials and are renovated according to the contemporary philosophy of space.
Norte Júnior, the Avenues Architect
Manuel Joaquim Norte Júnior (1878-1962) is a multi Valmor awards architect; author and creator with over one hundred signed projects; who has redefined residential spaces with a personal signature of “Decorator Architect” facing the Modernism emergence in 1930 and 1940; a “Português Suave” ahead of its time.
Norte Júnior’s name is etched in the city’s architecture through his most emblematic works that defined a distinct way of living in Lisbon.
The Modernism’s Present Continuous
The 86-88 Castilho is part of a vast legacy left by Norte Júnior in the history of Lisbon, representing a good example of its aesthetic evolution towards modernism in the 1930s.
The first works of the “Designer of Eclecticism” were luxurious and award-winning residential buildings, mansions and eclectic villas from the early twentieth century.
Designed in 1936 for Elvira & Santos Lda., the 86-88 Castilho commenced its construction in the same year and was declared completed in 1937. Conceived from the ground up, the fivestory building emerged with basement, ground floor and three floors articulated by the main and service stairs.
A new condominium is about to rise at Castilho Street, inspired by Norte Júnior’s career and reshaped with four additional floors that complete the block and the urban language.
REHABILITATION PROJECT
The Modernista is a reinterpretation of Norte Júnior’s vision that respects the original trace and materials, with high-quality apartments, services and amenities.
